EnaliaTec participated in THALASSA 2026 – Marine Sciences Conference, held in Larnaca, Cyprus, on 21–22 May 2026. The conference brought together representatives from the marine research, technology and innovation communities to exchange knowledge and present new approaches supporting the sustainable exploration, monitoring and protection of the marine environment.
During the conference, Angelos Manglis, representing EnaliaTec, delivered a presentation entitled “Engaging Citizens in the Participatory Monitoring of Underwater Cultural and Natural Heritage through a Remote Crowdsourcing Platform”, introducing the i-ScubaDiving platform and its contribution to the participatory monitoring of Underwater Cultural and Natural Heritage.
i-ScubaDiving is a free digital crowdsourcing platform that enables divers and citizens to contribute photographs and videos captured using underwater cameras. Through its integrated processing services, the uploaded material can be transformed into photomosaics, three-dimensional reconstructions and interactive Virtual Reality experiences. The generated digital content can also be organised and shared through an interactive GIS-based map.
The presentation highlighted the potential of using visual material collected by recreational divers to expand the geographical and temporal coverage of underwater observations. Repeated contributions can support the creation of long-term visual records, strengthening the documentation, remote study and monitoring of underwater sites and environments.
Through its participation in THALASSA 2026, EnaliaTec demonstrated how the combination of citizen science, three-dimensional reconstruction technologies and Virtual Reality applications can reduce the technical barriers associated with underwater documentation and strengthen collaboration among citizens, divers, researchers and other relevant stakeholders.
Participation in the conference provided an important opportunity to present i-ScubaDiving within an interdisciplinary environment dedicated to marine science, technological innovation, the protection of cultural and natural heritage, and the active involvement of citizens.
